SAN & Cloud Platform: Storage System Upgrade (Complete)
Posted by Kevin Stange on 24 January 2013 02:06 PM

This maintenance has been completed successfully.

Update 2:10 AM: The maintenance is now complete.  The upgrade process has completed on the second node and operations appear stable.  We did not observe any interruptions in service during this upgrade.  If there are any outstanding issues, please contact support as soon as possible to let us know.

Update 1:50 AM: We are now upgrading the unit that primarily supports the SATA storage.  During this next period, the load of both nodes will be carried by the newly upgraded unit.

Update 1:44 AM: The upgrade process has completed on the first node and operations appear stable.  We will start the second node's reboot in about 5 minutes.

Update 1:00 AM: The maintenance has started.  We will first upgrade the unit that primarily supports the SAS storage.  During this period the load of both storage nodes will be carried by the other unit.  We will provide updates as the upgrade progresses.

We have scheduled an upgrade to the system software for our SAN storage platform, which is used to power the storage for our Cloud Platform and customer accessible SAN services. This update fixes many bugs, some performance issues, and provides support for new technology.

Due to the redundant nature of the SAN platform, the entire load will be transferred to a single controller box while the other is upgraded. This process will be performed for each controller and performance and stability will be tested before and after each change before continuing. When the load is transferred using a normal "takeover," there should be no interruption to service, though periods of slow response times may occur. While we expect the transfer of load to be seamless, if a failure condition should occur that may impact filesystem integrity, we will stop maintenance and proactively correct issues.

Date: Sunday, February 10th, 2013
Start Time: 1:00 AM CST (GMT-6)
End Time: 4:00 AM CST (GMT-6)
Maintenance Scope: SAN storage controller systems
Customer Impact: Customers may notice brief slow performance or IO hangs. If a failure occurs, mounted filesystems could require remounting or filesystem checking.

If you have any questions or need assistance during the upgrade, please contact us via our helpdesk.
